Five years ago, the members of Staten Island’s not-for-profit community proposed a concept for a new organization that would provide a common voice and common resource to Staten Island’s not-for-profit organizations. From that concept came the Staten Island NFP Association, an organization that now counts more than 130 local not-for-profits as members, provides a robust schedule of annual professional development and technical assistance services, and serves as a common voice to tell the story of the importance of the not-for-profit sector on Staten Island’s quality of life.

Since our founding we have achieved significant accomplishments towards fulfilling our mission of serving as a common voice and resource for Staten Island’s not-for-profits, including: Hosting dozens of professional development and networking events on Staten Island each year, many of which are led by regional not-for-profit professionals and which address areas of specific interest such as fundraising and development, Board development, governance compliance, human resources, and facilities management; Launching the first-ever Staten Island not-for-profit Conference featuring two keynote speakers, eight breakout sessions, and hundreds of attendees; Working closely with the United Way of New York City to identify, train and place potential Board members at Staten Island’s not-for-profit organizations; Cooperating with media outlets and civic leaders to expand the understanding of the importance of Staten Island’s industry sectors; Providing hundreds of direct technical assistance services to not-for-profits, including help with complicated governance issues, regulatory requirements, and dozens of other not-for-profit related management issues. The Staten Island NFP Association offers several levels of assistance to our member organizations. Some of this assistance is provided through a regular and robust schedule of programs and events that are targeted at the Board, executives, and staff of our member organizations.

Participants in these sessions received more than $900 in professional development services, and because SINFPA professional development sessions are open to any of our organization’s executives, staff, and Board members, our flexible registration policy allows for several members of our member organizations to participate and therefore benefit from these locally based and expert-led professional development opportunities. In addition to this robust series of professional development activities, the Staten Island NFP Association has continued to focus on its role as a strong advocate for Staten Island’s not-for-profits by working closely with elected officials, civic leaders and media professionals to tell the stories of the important issues facing our Borough’s not-for-profit organizations.

Our advocacy efforts have also included continued relationships with professional development and technical assistance providers from throughout the city and region, allowing our Association to leverage the expertise of such prominent assistance providers as the Foundation Center, the Nonprofit Finance Fund, Lawyer’s Alliance, ReServe, the TCC Group, the Support Center for Nonprofit Management, the United Way of New York City, and Community Resources Exchange to provide locally on Staten Island the same high-quality assistance that not-for-profits throughout the City enjoy.

Finally, the Staten Island NFP Association has been pleased to serve as the forum through which effective partnerships among our member organizations have been formed and strengthened. Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider membership in the Association is the opportunity that it affords you to participate in a true network of peers and colleagues who share your vision, your challenges and your solutions. For the past four years we have been pleased to experience the creation of collaborative networks that afford our Borough’s not-for-profit professionals the chance to establish relationships with others who share their passion for improving the quality of life in our community, and we remain eager to provide these opportunities to you and your colleagues well into the future.
